Melbourne, consistently named as the World’s most liveable city, is facing a crisis in moving people. Worsening traffic congestion, crowded trains and trams, an ever-growing suburban spread and inadequately connected regional areas are posing serious challenges.

The Melbourne Rail Plan is a comprehensive rail-based public transport strategy for greater Melbourne to 2050 to serve current and future growth to 8 million.

Produced by the Rail Futures Institute (RFI), it has detailed, staged and costed plans for new and improved heavy rail, light rail, tram and new medium capacity transit corridors, and how these should be fully integrated with metropolitan planning strategies. The Plan shows how such development, through phased investment, can significantly reduce Melbourne’s massive car dependency, benefit the City’s liveability, economic performance, social fabric and environmental sustainability.
